about

A selection of refreshing, breezy, full of grit and groove South Afropop from the late 70s / early 80s. These 7”s of funk fuelled workouts combine the rhythmic passion of Africa and drive of US funk from that era.

Check 'Twelve Mabone' as it conjures up images of dusty outdoor dancing, 100s of pairs of feet kicking up the dusty red soil of Africa in a manic outing of unbridled joy, check the rhythm and imagine a young Malcolm McLaren hearing this type of music and the inspirations that it led to…

'John Tate' by Stars is a lowdown groove fuelled walk through the sleazy sound of funk.

The VIPS ‘Mambo Mambo’ is like Kid Creole boiled down to nothing but the most vital and simple ingredients, punctuated by afro-beat style brass licks.

Kensani Girls 'Mtomeni' is a similar sound and rhythmic journey as the amazing output from Maalem Mahmoud Guinia & Floating Points and their 'Mimoun Marhaba’ track released in 2015 on the Border Community and Eglo label partnership.

Initial support from the limited 7”s came from DJs and vinyl junkies including Dom Servini, Diesler, Paris DJs, Moonboots, Mr Thing, Andy Wilson [Ibiza Sonica Radio] & Craig Charles [BBC Radio]

All tracks given a remaster touch up by Mr Chop and the album comes with a bonus B-Boy 30m mix from Liverpool's finest, Pooky.
